INTRODUCTION
okedama & Terrarium Introduction
Kokedama, which translates to “moss ball” in Japanese, is a traditional form of bonsai that combines simplicity, elegance, and nature into a single living sculpture. It features a plant whose roots are wrapped in soil and enclosed in a round ball of moss, creating a natural and minimalist display without the need for a pot.
A terrarium is a small, self-contained garden grown in a glass container using plants, moss, stones, and decorative elements. It allows participants to create their own miniature garden and explore the beauty of a self-sustaining natural ecosystem.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to arrange plants, moss, stones, and other natural materials to design their own unique Kokedama and terrarium. They will also gain basic knowledge of plant care and maintenance. This activity encourages creativity, mindfulness, and an appreciation for nature, offering participants a beautiful living piece to take home.

Ms Tan Ai Chi
Kokedama is a form of Japanese garden art where plant roots are wrapped in soil and then enclosed with moss or sphagnum moss, forming a spherical shape or any preferred design. These living ornaments can be hung or displayed, creating a unique and aesthetically pleasing green accent. With its natural, simple, and calming style, kokedama has gained popularity as it brings a sense of tranquility and nature into any space. It is also easy to maintain, making it ideal for busy individuals who appreciate both beauty and practicality in plant arrangements.
Teacher Ai Chi developed an interest in the “living beauty” of plants while studying tea ceremony, as she wished to incorporate more lively and vibrant greenery into her tea settings and living environment. To deepen her understanding of plant aesthetics, she traveled to Taiwan to learn kokedama-making. Kokedama had already become very popular in Taiwan, and in recent years, it has gradually gained traction in Singapore as well.
After mastering the design and crafting techniques of kokedama, Teacher Ai Chi began sharing this art locally. She occasionally teaches kokedama workshops at our Bukit Batok and Nanyang Evergreen Centres, guiding participants to experience the joy of creating living art, appreciate the therapeutic charm of plants, and at the same time find inner calm—allowing the mind to slow down and settle.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- All course fees are inclusive of GST.
- Please note that payments for courses are non-refundable except when the Centre cancels the class due to unforeseen circumstances.
- Courses held in the evening are only open to those aged 18 and above. Younger students who have not reached the minimum age will not be accepted unless accompanied by a parent.
- The course fees do not cover the teaching materials and insurance for off-campus lessons (if any).
- The Centre will send a course-related notice to students through WhatsApp or email before the commencement of classes. Please notify the Centre if you did not receive any message one week before the commencement date.
- Please arrive at the classroom at least 10 minutes before the session.
- Children, guest students or sit-in observers and recordings are NOT allowed in all classes for the purpose of maintaining lesson quality and as a show of respect for the teachers and other students.
- If the lesson falls on a public holiday, it will be postponed to the following week. The Centre reserves the right to make any adjustments to the class schedules.
